First Graders Are Tackling "TRICKY" Words!

First Graders had a wonderful week with Miss Kris tackling tricky words using characters from the story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."  We have been working on strategies we can use to help our reading to be more accurate and fluent.  This was a fun interactive way for students to act out how to tackle tricky words.  Miss Kris had asked some students to portray Goldilocks, Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear from the story, and then asked the characters, "What do you do when you come to a tricky word?"  Miss Kris covered up some words and our friends from the story had to look at the picture to help figure out the word.  Not always does the picture give us a clue.
Goldilocks is working with Miss Kris on tackling a tricky word in Mrs. B's. class!!  All three classes had a BLAST acting out Goldilocks and The Three Bears!  They are Rock Stars!!

Here are some of the strategies we learned this week:
  • I can look at the pictures and use clues to figure out
  • words.
  • I can sound it out.
  • I can look for word parts I know.
  • I can look close at the letters and sounds in a word and stretch and sound it out.
  • I can try it two ways.
  • I can skip the word and read the whole sentence then I go back and think about a word that fits. Does it make sense?
  • NEVER LET THE WORD WIN!
Mrs. Steinmeyers's class is pointing out the tricky words.                                                                              Ms. Abel's class is looking at all the
  •                                                                                          parts.
